The Problem
Functional Illiteracy
If you look at most sources, you will see that the literacy rate in the U.S. is 99%.
But, dig a little deeper, and you will see an epidemic of functional illiteracy.
Almost 60% of all American adults read below the 8th grade level, and 50% read below the 6th grade level.
About 65% of all children in K-12 schools read below grade level, creating a new generation of functionally illiterate adults.
The Emotional Cost
If you ask people about their own literacy, the first thing you will encounter is denial. Who wants to admit that they can’t read? Dig a little deeper again and you will hear about the emotional damage that illiteracy creates. Anger, depression, alcoholism, criminal behavior and self-harm all follow illiteracy. In order to solve illiteracy, we will have to overcome the emotional blocks to learning.
The Digital Divide
Reviewing reading test data makes it clear that the vast majority of functionally-illiterate adults and struggling children lack access to literacy instruction through technology. They are in the bottom two-thirds of Americans economically: urban poor, rural poor, prisoners, immigrant families, etc. The epidemic of functional illiteracy cannot be solved without solving the problem of the digital divide.
The Solution
Family Learning
The solution to the illiteracy epidemic, and best approach to overcome the obstacles of emotional blocks and digital access, is family learning.
The strongest overall motivator for most adults is to create a better life for their children and for others in their families.
The strongest motivator for children is to please their parents.
By leveraging that reciprocal motivation, family learning can change literacy outcomes for both adults and their children.
Implementing Family Learning Using Software
The Family Learning Project provides social benefit organizations with family learning software and training in how to use it with adults and their children in their region.
Family learning software provides opportunities for family members to learn together
